World war one
The Great War (also known as World War One) was in 1914 and sent many young men away from their homes into a world of the unknown. Wembworthy lost many young men to the war and also took in many evacuees. Everybody had to do their bit to help the war effort and the women had to work on the farms.
world war two
Another World War sent may young men off to fight, leaving the women behind to hold their community together. With technology moving faster than it ever had before, the need for men to work on a farm slowly reduced. This meant that once the war was over and then the remaining men returned, many families had to move away for work. With the size of the village reducing, shops, post offices and pubs gradually had to close down.
